TREKKING

Going on "trek." That is the quintessential word for missionary life. I grew up with the word. Dad did "it" as a missionary in Nigeria. It is part of South African history. It flavors my thoughts of Africa. It is "the" word of my life. Pack up your tent and join me!

FAMILY

This has been a season for family.

A few days ago, while in California, I was able to visit my parents. After almost 50 years on the mission field in Nigeria they settled near San Diego. One of the sacrifices in the world of missions is separation from family. For us, it started at 7 years old when we went off to boarding school. Then as adult children, we only occasionally saw them. Our furloughs never coincided. We were in South Africa and they in Nigeria. Even though we were on the same continent, it was a world away both physically and politically. But these past dozen years, we have been together at least a couple times a year when my travels took me to California. And they have enjoyed being near my sister and two grandchildren. For the first time in several years, both my sisters and I were able to visit at the same time.

We celebrated Thanksgiving at our house with about ten of us. In addition to our own kids, other friends and missionary kids, whose parents are overseas, joined us for the day.

Ryan and Maranda live in Atlanta. He continues to build his video business and celebrates are very good year. Maranda works as a real estate agent.
